420 Beginner and Intro to High School Sailing
One week of beginner level junior sailing. Working with a teammate and learn to captain and crew the club 420. Interested in competing with the VHS Club Sailing Team? Learn the ropes here!
Ages 13-18
No experience necessary. This course is designed for those junior sailors who want to experience sailing a double-handed boat.
The benefits of beginner 420 sailing are to ensure safety on and off the water, build confidence, learning respect for your peers and the environment, sportsmanship and developing an understanding for how double-handed boats operate and learning to work as part of a team.
Goals of this course are to learn basic 420 sailing knowledge: safety, parts of the boats, rigging/derigging, capsize/recovery, knots/lines, points of sail, casting off/landing, tacking and jibing, upwind/downwind sailing, skipper and crew positions, introduction to racecourses, teamwork, and of course having fun!
Cost: $450/sailor
Sailors MUST be able to swim 50 yards. A swim test will be giving the first day.
Sailors need to arrive each day prepared to sail! We require each sailor to bring:
· Refillable Water Bottle
· Snack (No refrigeration is available on site)
· U.S. Coast Guard Approved Type III Life Jacket (Personal Flotation Device) with whistle attached
· Closed-Toe Shoes to be worn at all times!! (No Crocs or Flip-Flops allowed on land or on water)
· Sunscreen
